EXCERPT
I was walking toward the class, head down, when I heard Jimmy call my name. I looked up to see him jogging toward me.
“Hey, I was hoping to catch you before class,” he said with a shy smile.
I looked up at his sandy hair, which was a little too long as usual, and sweet face, and smiled back. I really missed being around him.
“What’s up?” I asked.
“Look, I heard a bit about what’s going on with you, and I talked to Jess. I just wanted to tell you that I’m sorry.”
“For what?” I asked, totally surprised.
“Because I know I kinda lost it after Cassie died, and you were there for me. I was depressed and angry, but you didn’t give up, no matter how much I tried to get you to. I’m sorry that I didn’t do the same for you.”
“Oh, Jimmy, it’s not the same thing. No one died, I just started being an idiot,” I said, taking his hand in mine.
“You’re not an idiot, and no, no one died, but you still needed help. And instead of helping, I gave you a hard time about how you were dressing and who you were hanging out with. I shouldn’t have done that.”
Jimmy looked so earnest I pulled him in for a hug and kissed his cheek.
“You’re here for me now,” I whispered as I pulled back.
