Inspiration for Day Zero
I came up with the title for Day Zero shortly after I finished the third or fourth chapter of the book. The spot on the earth’s surface that is closest to where a detonation takes place is often called Ground Zero. It is, in fact, the aftermath of a disastrous event. The storyline of my novel certainly fit that description, so I called Elle’s story Day Zero, because society finds itself back at the drawing board after an electromagnetic pulse disables the technological infrastructure of the entire country.
I visited Santa Monica, Hollywood and the greater Los Angeles area when I was in high school. I was working as a writer in high school, although I had yet to publish a novel. I always thought Los Angeles would be a fascinating place to set a post-apocalyptic novel. With Day Zero I was able to do so. It’s fun to be able to build a fictional scenario around reality. It gives a story more depth and flavor. Using real landmarks and street names lends a sense of realism to a story that readers find fascinating and authors love integrating. Day Zero is one of the more fun stories that I’ve written, from an author’s perspective. A lot of research went into this novel, and that included visiting Santa Monica, West Hollywood and beyond to make sure Elle’s world was geographically and even historically accurate.

Alright, this sounds like exactly the type of book I love!! I can’t wait to get into this series
As for the question, where would I go to look for food in the city. That’s a hard question. Assuming you mean Hollywood and LA, I have no idea. But in any city, I think I would watch the neighborhood around me, see who is in their home and who isn’t. The stores will have been looted and full of dangerous people who will do anything to survive themselves. So I think the best bet is to stay off of the radar. Check out some abandoned houses, or maybe a liquor store that is a smaller type of “on the corner” type place. Generally in apocalypse type situations, unless you are well armed and not alone, I think it’s best to avoid populated places. Heck, if need be, get into the forest and eat some leaves and berries, ya know? I’d much rather do that than risk getting wounded, kidnapped, raped or murdered.

Food banks or grocery stores. I’d also go to sporting good store for a fishing rod and tackle as well as gun and ammo.

Grocery Store than probably my own basement-I keep it well stocked…just in case of a storm etc…living in Canada we tend to prepare…lol

The first place I would go to find food would be a grocery store. I would get everything I could in cans and dried foods. Secondly I would look for fresh foods and plant seeds. If nothing in grocery stores I would go to homes or places like warehouses which would be transporting food. So many things to look for besides food. I would be looking for weapons and medicines. A lot to be done in a short amount of time.
