GIVEAWAY and EXCERPT: Carnelian by B. Kristin McMichael

GIVEAWAY and EXCERPT: Carnelian by B. Kristin McMichael

Carnelian centers around Seth and Mari. They are meant to be together according got Seth, but Mari is not exactly falling for the cute guy just because he says that. Instead she overheads that she is to be number twenty-four on his list of conquests and decides to pass on his attempts to woo her, but that is easier said than done as Seth doesn’t plan to make it easy for her. Meeting Seth for the first time: I closed my book and looked up from under the maple canopy to the blue sky above. I had a normal life, but girls in books always went on adventures. I guess that was what going far off to college was to me, an adventure. My future was already planned, but I’d give anything to be one of those heroines. I wanted to live the life I found in these books. I… Read more »

RELEASE DAY REVIEW: These Broken Stars

RELEASE DAY REVIEW: These Broken Stars

I have been very neglectful of science fiction this year. I rarely read it anymore, not because I don’t love it, but because I’m just so picky about what kind of SF I like. So when I saw These Broken Stars offered up on Netgalley, I figured I’d give it a try. I don’t have the same expectations for all genres. YA and NA are totally different and SF and Romance are equally different. But when I’m reading SF I have a big line drawn between hard and soft SF. These Broken Stars straddled that line pretty successfully in my mind. It has a soldier in it – score one for the authors right there because much of SF is about the military. So I automatically liked it for that reason alone. Second, the soldier was not a dumbass. Score two for the authors. They actually knew what they were… Read more »

KINDLE FIRE GIVEAWAY: RETURN by JA Huss

KINDLE FIRE GIVEAWAY: RETURN by JA Huss

CHAPTER ONE – LUCAN: Amelia Habitat You would not think that an artificial intelligence would have a scent, but Amelia does. It’s intoxicating. Her apartments in the top floor of my home smell only of her. I’m not even sure I could describe it, but the closest thing would be space. Space has a smell. It’s not something you can discern directly because there’s no air in space and scents need to be carried on a current. And I can’t smell it on myself, not even when I come back from space because I’m encased in timeshift shell. But I smell it on Amelia because she stands out in the dark nothing when she’s thinking. I always know when she’s in a pensive mood because the smell of space permeates everything. It clings to her even when I know she’s not been outside the habitat for weeks. She smells like… Read more »

GIVEAWAY and EXCERPT: The Last Bastion of the Living By Rhiannon Frater

GIVEAWAY and EXCERPT: The Last Bastion of the Living By Rhiannon Frater

The Last Bastion of the Living By Rhiannon Frater Excerpt from Prologue A massive shockwave rippled through the perimeter wall, tossing soldiers off their feet and onto the catwalk, or over the wall into the Scourge horde below as one of the mobile units twisted around in one of the deeper craters and wrenched another unit completely about. The torsion between the two units sent another shudder through the perimeter wall and Maria clung to the catwalk as Ryan fell on top of her. Together, they rode the catwalk to the ground, tumbling into the mud. Maria immediately scrambled to her feet and gasped. The steel mesh had torn free of one of the units and the Scourge were shoving their bodies through the frayed opening. The squads closest to the breach opened fire. The mesh wall shimmered as it wavered under the onslaught of the undead. The mobile units… Read more »

REVIEW: Valley of Darkness by AB Whelan

REVIEW: Valley of Darkness by AB Whelan

REVIEW I fell in love with this tender story in the first few pages of Fields of Elysium last year. Since then I’ve read both parts of Valley of darkness and my feelings have not changed.  This series is a continuing story of Molly, a teenager form Earth, and Victor, a teenager from another planet that Molly accesses vi a wormhole.  The world building is fantastic and I love the characters. Molly is such a tender soul, always trying to do the right thing, but she’s also brave and persistent, loyal to those she loves, and just a nice girl.  This series has a lot of action in it and Valley of Darkness Part Two follows that precedent. In this book Molly is trying to prove to The Prophet or Arkana that she is worthy of becoming a Sentinel, and she wants to use the fact that she’s an Earthling… Read more »

$50 GIVEAWAY: I Am Just Junco Omnibus Books 1-3 by JA Huss

EXCERPT FROM CLUTCH BOOK ONE Tier throws down his rifle, takes a deep breath and looks at Moju. “My charge is out, give me all the grenades.” Moju leans heavily against the wall, fishes around in his pockets, and pulls out three canisters and hands them over to Tier. And that’s when I hear the clicking from the hallway behind us. “Shit! They’re back!” From the hazy cloud of thick dust a massive amalgamation of bot parts appears. I scream and both Moju and I train our rifles on the thing that comes towards us. We blast it back a few paces and it’s forced to reassemble. I steal a look at Tier and he’s already pulling the pin on the first grenade and running back towards me yelling, “Fire in the hole!” Moju dives for the corner as Tier grabs me and yanks me to the floor. The blast… Read more »

COVER REVEAL: Wasteland by Lindsay Leggett

About Lindsay Leggett Nearly every writer struggles to put together information about themselves, perhaps because we’re so used to detailing the lives and ways of others. For the most part I am a writer, editor, photographer, and all-around artist living in the wilds north of Toronto, Ontario. I thrive on the juxtaposition of beauty and grit, enjoy urban crawls, indie everything, and time well-spent in the woods. Website • Twitter • Goodreads
