A Death’s Escort Novel
By Cambria Hebert
Love or Death? A simple question really. The choice seems obvious. But. What if you never knew love, what if your life was spent just trying to survive? What if you knew your fate before you were fully grown?
And then you died.
And you were given another chance. A better chance.
This new life depended upon one thing: your job. And so you agreed. You thought it would be simple. You thought it would be cut and dry.
It never is.
And now you are left holding the fate of someone else in the palm of your hand and you have to make the ultimate choice.
Love or Death?
I love the premise of this novel and when I got into it is filled with so many fun things. First of all, the setup is this: Dex is kinda of a jerk. OK, no – I’m being nice – Dex is a jerk. But he’s got his reasons, so he’s definitely likable. Dex is homeless and lives on the streets. He’s hanging out in front of a diner late at night when our heroine, Piper, gets off work (she’s a waitress) and heads for the bus stop to go home. They live in Alaska, so it’s frigid outside – dead of winter, and the roads are icy. Dex is stalking Piper to steal her tips so he can go inside the diner and get some food.
He’s done the deed and he’s about to walk off with his cash, when he notices Pipers about to get run over by a bus. Something overtakes him and he pushes her out of the way, killing himself in the process. Only he doesn’t really die – he gets a job offer. From a guy who looks like Mr. Burns from The Simpsons. And it’s a pretty good deal – all he has to do is kill people and he gets a new life filled with all the material goods he can think of.
Naturally, he takes it. But then he learns that his first victim is Piper. He’s on board – don’t get me wrong. He wants to get his reward – but then he realizes that Piper has been touched by knowing him for those few brief minutes out on the street, and even though she knows he picked her pocket and took her tip money, she has lingering feelings for this man who saved her life.
It was sweet to watch this change in Dex – lots of stuff happens to Piper and each time Dex is conflicted with what his purpose is. I can’t say much more without spoilers, but this is a sweet new adult book (Piper is in college studying to be a doctor) and is something you could recommend to your teens and read for yourself. I loved the ending and I’m really looking forward to the next book.
