I met my husband one day after work when I got off the train to go home. He was one of those taxi drivers that hung out there, looking for customers.

At first, I thought, “Oh no, I hope he is not trying to be anything other than friends!” I wasn’t into guys who were not professional or working towards a career. I honestly couldn’t see myself going to my sorority soirees and bringing him along.

He somehow always seemed to be at the train station whenever I got off the train, and soon we started talking. He was funny, and I had not expected that. I had noticed that he was kind of cute, too. Well, not just kind of cute; he was handsome.

I did not expect to say yes when he asked me if I wanted to go and get something to eat, but I did say yes. I liked talking to him. Maybe because his experiences were so different from the guys I usually dated. They had all gone to college, pledged a fraternity, graduated, gone into their chosen field, and tried to make the best of it. I wasn’t used to someone who hadn’t finished high school and had been working for himself as a cab driver for as long as he had.

We continued to see each other for about nine months, and then I found out I was pregnant. His first reaction was not what I expected.

About the author…
Image and video hosting by TinyPicWhen my husband first asked me to be his girlfriend, I surprised him by saying, “No.”

We were on the phone, as we were every night. I could tell he was hurt, but since we were on the phone and not together in person, we had to talk, and that was a good thing.

I explained, “I’m 30 years old. I’ve already had the last boyfriend I am ever going to
have. In the future, I am going to have a husband, not a boyfriend.”

He surprised me by taking this in stride. “I understand,” he said. “You do realize I am in the Navy and all that entails?”
“I was born in the Navy!” This was true. My dad was in the Navy.

Four months later, he took me on a date to the top of the Space Needle in Seattle.

He passed me a little black velvet box under the table, and whispered:
“Babe, will you marry me?”

“Do you mean it?”

Yes, that’s what I said. Not very romantic, was I?
