Death.
For some, it’s simply one of life’s certainties, nothing more. For others, it’s merely a fleeting thought, one often overshadowed by the reckless delusion that they have been blessed with the gift of immortality.
For Aubrey Miller, death is the definition of her very existence. Overcome with the guilt resulting from the loss of her beloved family, she alters her appearance from the once beautiful, blonde-haired, blue-eyed little girl to that of one shrouded in complete darkness, enveloping herself in her own unbreakable fortress of solitude as a form of protection for others.
As she enters her first year of college, her goal is simple: Earn a degree with the least amount of social interaction as possible. What she never anticipates is the formation of very unlikely relationships with two people who will change her life in ways she never believed possible: Quinn Matthews, the boisterous former pageant queen, and Kaeleb McMadden, a childhood friend from her past who never really let her go.
Over the years, as their connections intertwine and grow, a seemingly indestructible bond is formed between the three…
But when death painfully reemerges, Aubrey is lost once again, burying herself deeper than ever before inside the familiar fortification of her fears.
Will the refuge of friendship, the solidarity of life-long bonds, and the power of unconditional love be enough to do the impossible?
Will they be enough to finally bring about…

REVIEW:
This is a wonderful New Adult book. The story involves many layers, but most of all it is a story of acceptance and life. The entire story takes place over the course of four years. Right there, once I saw the four parts, I was hesitant to read. I like my stories not drawn out. But, this wasn’t drawn out. L.B. did a brilliant job at connecting the reader to Aubrey’s college years in a story that is believable and packed with emotions.
Raven Miller is college freshman who looks like a nightmare with white cover up, cat colored contacts and dyed black hair. Her face has piercings from her ears, to her nose and lips. She has no friends, and that’s by choice. She has no family, and that’s because of her. Or at least she thinks so. Raven has created a protective wall around her heart, soul, and body to eliminate any social connections to another person. She wants none of it.
“I learned a long time ago to never judge a book by its cover. It seems what people try to represent on the outside very rarely mirrors their inside. Beautiful people tend to be ugly, ugly people tend to be beautiful, storms tend to brew below a person’s cool, calm exterior, and tremendously happy people tend to be overcompensating for their own grief. Nothing is ever really what it seems.”-Quinn, Raven’s roomie
But what happens when the locks around her memories and heart, slowly become unlocked…
Each part of the story, Raven’s years at college, allow the reader to journey with her as she rediscovers who Aubrey is, how important love is, and to accept the difficulties and hardships that is life. By senior year, Aubrey is who she is supposed to be, and I felt like I was along for her resurrection, too. I felt each and every step…from her broken heart slowly mending, to her first make-over, and even her first kiss.
There’s nothing better in life than reading a good book. One that takes you on an emotional journey, filled with angst, love, hate, and desperation. This is one of those books, and I highly recommend. If you’re a fan of The Sea of Tranquility, and Josh Bennett is a top book boyfriend, you’ll LOVE this story and Kaeleb McMadden. *SWOON*
“You’ve always been my sunshine. Ever since we were kids.” He tightens his gaze. “I know you’re still in there, Bree. And I will find you.” –Kaeleb
Go read this to see if Kaeleb ever finds his sunshine…He’s such a great book boyfriend.
