Just this weekend, there have been posts in reading groups I’m a member in all about stepbrother romances… and whether you love, like, tolerate or hate them. The ongoing posts about the popularity of these taboo books are evident in my Facebook newsfeeds and I have to admit, I really enjoy a good taboo stepbrother story. There’s nothing I love more than a good girl involved with a bad boy, add stepbrother to the equation and I can’t put it down, most of the time.
Let me stress, I do NOT like, enjoy or read incest books. I just can’t do it, and I am one of the few who couldn’t finish Flowers in the Attic. I know, that series has a huge following, and many, many of my friends devoured those books when I was in high school. I just, NO, I can’t read those. However, add the forbidden, hot ass, bad boy stepbrother who actually has a big heart and is protective, and hell yeah I’ll read it.
I think my love for stepbrother stories started when I read my first one last year, and since I LOVED that one, I was more willing to one-click those kindle deals that highlight the word “stepbrother”. Last year I read Penelope Ward’s Stepbrother Dearest, and well, fell in love. I devoured that book in one sitting and was mesmerized by Penelope’s words and the details and emotions the story evoked. I loved how this story was told in parts. Parts one when the reader gets to see how step-siblings live together while each developing feelings for the other, forbidden feelings. When circumstances make these Greta and Elec separate, my heart broke. In the second part these two characters meet again and can’t help but feel emotions neither one is ready or able to act on, and it only deepens this story. Gah! I’ve read more step-sibling books here and there, and the majority always keep me interested. After thinking and reading all the posts on Facebook lately-there’s definitely opinions about this theme in romance, I decided that I’m just one of those readers who loves a taboo, forbidden tale. In fact, I read another book this weekend!
PRICK- A Stepbrother Romance by Sabrina Paige is the book I read this weekend. And you know what, I really, really enjoyed it. I’ve written about this before, but I know a book is good when I think about it when I’m not able to read. This is the kind of book I found myself thinking about as I’m driving to meet a friend and looking forward to reading more when I get home!
The story is familiar. Good, ivy-league girl meets bad boy who turns out to be her new stepbrother. And while the story is familiar and not very unique, I found myself absorbed in the story. Katherine is opinionated, strong willed, smart and sassy. Caulter is hot, bad boy, arrogant, yet has a warm gooey center after you peel away the hard layers.
Yes, this book is predictable, but it’s also addicting, kinda like watching Gossip Girl. The main characters in Kate and Cautler are the attraction in this story. While the secondary characters in the TV series, Gossip Girl draw me in, there aren’t really any meaningful secondary friends/characters int his book. I just found myself escaping in this world. The words were very visual in the sense I could see myself in New Hampshire, enjoying the summer months, having a secret love affair with the one person I shouldn’t!
While I really enjoyed this read, I think that it lacked something…what that something is, I’m not quite sure, except I wanted to fall deeper in love with these two. I wanted words and examples of the sweetness between these two when their walls were down and they sought solace with each other. I wanted her to leave him drawings expressing her feelings that only he saw, or him leaving her secret notes/texts/messages that only she would understand. Those types of connections (bottlecaps with Gavin and Emily, flirty texts between Christian and Ana, countdowns and peanut butter between Ava and Jesse) would make me five star this book. I really, truly enjoyed this escape this weekend.

So, to answer the ongoing question whether I like or dislike stepbrother romances, I think the answer is a HELL YES.

While somewhat creepy and taboo, a stepbrother isn’t a blood relative, so I wouldn’t call it incest. I haven’t read any of them, but it certainly seems like the latest trend in themes.
I’d probably read Stepbrother Dearest if I chose to read one; a friend of mine loved it, and didn’t even finish Prick (rare for her to not finish a book).
I did read Flowers in the Attic, and yes it’s gross, but there’s something about the overall story I liked. And (while still gross), as far as those kids knew, they would never be free. I have mixed feelings on that.

There seem to be a lot of these stepbrother books around lately. Incest books are creepy but somehow the step sibling ones dont seem quite as weird if the characters involved meet when theyre older and arent raised together. Yes, I was one that loved Flowers in the Attic. I think it didn’t disturb me too much because of the way they had to grow up, it kind of made sense to me in a warped way that they would end up together. Sometimes when two souls experience something life changing, they can only cling together because no one else will understand.
And on the subject of stepbrothers, if it is written well like Stepbrother Dearest I will read it! So I’m definitely going to check out Prick.
