Spencer Shrike is a plotter. Known for his ingenious, albeit illegal, plans that keeps the Team running efficiently and out of jail, he carries this same love of order into his personal life. He’s kept his long-time main squeeze on the sidelines for years as he builds the Shrike Bikes empire.

Veronica Vaughn is an explosion ready to happen. Ronnie lives in the here and now. She lives for today. She knows what she wants, and she wants it now. And right now Ron the Bomb Vaughn wants Spencer shrike to leave her the hell alone. She’s done playing his game. She’s done waiting around. She’s moving forward with her own plots, plans, and dreams and she’s moving forward tonight. Ron the Bomb is finally—finally—gonna get some satisfaction.

Too bad Spencer Shrike is standing in her way.

IF YOU HAVE NOT READ ALL THE OTHER BOOKS, STOP. Go back and read the books you skipped, including the novellas. Every book has clues and plot points, so if you have skipped books you will probably be lost immediately. :)

Spencer Shrike is a man with a plan. Get in. Get out. Move on. He loves Ron the Bomb, and her safety is the only thing on his mind. But life is a tricky bastard. And conning criminals for the better part of ten years brings its own set of problems. Sure, Rook lied her way out of a sticky situation, covering for Ronin, Ford, and Spencer’s crimes in the process. But not everyone is buying her story and Spencer is desperate to figure out who’s in town setting them up for a fall.

Veronica the Bombshell Vaughn has put up with Spencer Shrike’s shit for years and where has it gotten her? A big fat nowhere. No ring, no house, no kids, and no promises. In fact, Spencer is worse than ever—distant and moody. She’s done sitting at home, pining over a man she can’t have. She’s tired of being ignored and she’s coming out swinging.

Now there’s another man in town with his eye on her. He’s got secrets too, and he’s more than willing to share. She’s ready to jump ship. Because the last thing on Spencer’s mind is a relationship, and Ron the Bomb has had enough.

The entire Rook and Ronin series comes full circle. Every con, every lie, and every skeleton in the closet is back for one final shot at vengeance and the only way to set it right… is with GUNS.

The Rook and Ronin Series has seven books:
(1) TRAGIC
(2) MANIC
(3) PANIC

This week NAA took place in a blog hop that focused on Spencer Shrike and Veronica Vaughn. Here’s my final thoughts and recap…. bear with me…After all, Spencer is the one for me!

Spencer

I’m 100% invested in ALL the characters from the Rook and Ronin series. I’m so invested that I’ve become fully delusional in my love affair with my (now) number one book boyfriend-of all time. Bomb is a novella about said book boyfriend, Spencer Shrike. I’ve waited months to get my hands on this book. I claimed Spencer Shrike as my top 2013 book boyfriend months ago after I read the Rook and Ronin series, all three in a week. He was such a charmer in those books that I was beyond delighted when the author told me she was planning a book just for Spencer. It made me have a girl crush on her and I happily stalk her, daily. <—STILL do.

So what is it about Spencer that makes my heart melt and my panties wet? He’s a protector. He’s smart. He’s a charmer. He’s a bad ass with a heart of gold-you just don’t know it yet. He is my total package in book boyfriend material. I KNEW he was a sweetheart despite his hard ass exterior. I just KNEW there was something deeper and meaningful in him besides his charismatic, humorous, “I don’t care” attitude. And by the end of this novella, all my instincts proved right. I’m not sure how it was possible for me to love Spencer Shrike more, but I do. Jesus… his actions and words in this novella DID. ME. IN.

Now there’s Veronica. I wanted to hate her. I wanted to keep Spencer all to myself in my delusional love bubble. It would be easy for me to just read for Spencer and my love for him alone, but JA Huss has done what I thought would be impossible. I fell for Veronica too. I fell a little bit “in-like” with her in Slack, Ford’s novella. (She did after all have my favorite line of all time in a book.) In Bomb, she blew me away and I need to admit to myself she is the one for Spencer. *sob* Veronica is a sassy, strong, independent character. She is a kick ass heroine in her own right. You can tell she is totally in love with Spencer. It pains her to not be with him. But she stands by her decision not to be a doormat and for that, I adore her. To follow what you think and know to be true, and go against attraction, lust and love, and smoking chemistry—it’s the best kind of book angst I totally enjoy putting myself through. Plus the scenes between Ronnie and Spence are filled with steamy, totally hot, full blown chemistry. I was actually fanning myself. I had to stop and breathe…that’s right, I was actually holding my breath, and needed to remind myself to inhale. (But I did it to myself, I pictured myself as Ronnie throughout the entire book… and it proved to be the best Valentine’s Day present ever!)

To say I enjoyed these books is like a slap in the face. This is the best book I’ve read all year, and it’s a novella. I loved getting a glimpse of Spencer Shrike, and that’s what this book is. It’s a day in the life of this amazing, “he’s not what you think” character. You get a little bit of info here and there on the whys and what-not’s, but are still left curious, wanting more. JA does a brilliant job at dropping breadcrumbs and clues for what’s to come in the next novel, Guns. It’s going to be explosive, that’s all I know. Will the past come back and kick everyone’s ass? Do we even know everything that’s played a part in this series? Will everyone in FoCo get a HEA…? I’m not quite sure. What I am sure of is I can’t wait until Guns is released. Not only is it going to be my favorite birthday present, I have a feeling it’s going to be my favorite book of the year, if not ever.

BOMB

I’m going to call my doctor now and ask for a few weeks supply of Xanax, hopefully that will help me wait out the weeks to come Guns releases at the end of March. Bravo JA for a perfect novella. In my opinion, this is your best writing so far! And thank you for creating a world of characters that have occupied my life so immensely. I still need some intervention to remind me they aren’t quite as real as I make them out to be… and that is a definition of a great author.

Spencer Shrike is my all time favorite character. When reading this blog post, I kept thinking, “yes! that is exactly why he’s so hot”. I’m not a biker fan, but for Spencer, I’d give it a try.

  2. Shannon

Lucas and Mia from Frenched by Melanie Harlow are my favorite book couple, just love them!
I have some of the books in this series, I need to move them up my list!

  3. Kristy Petree

I loved Spencer in the Rook and Ronin trilogy (unfortunately I haven’t read his or Ford’s books yet. I know!). So he is my favorite Huss book boyfriend. Tammara Webber’s Lucas Maxfield is my favorite “other” book boyfriend. Thanks for the chance!

  4. KellyMae Helfrich

OMG, I love these books, have read and loved all 7, plus the others after!!

  5. Tarah Hodges-Wilkins

My favorite book boyfriend is Travis Maddox! Thanks for the chance! <3

  6. Sarah Lynn

My favorite book boyfriend changes frequently based on what I’ve read or am reading, and how I feel that day LOL! Right now it’s Hendrix, from Cannon by Sabrina Paige, because I just finished reading his book. Hendrix and Addy are a “taboo” couple, but the sparks fly!

  7. Tanya Guthrie

This is a hard one, but I’m still crushing hard on Ark! (And Merc, Ronin, Vaughn, but I’m sticking with Ark for now)

  8. Shannon Blackwell-Williams

My fave book couple is Brooke & Remy from Katy Evans REAL series!!
