REVIEW: Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor

REVIEW: Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor

Let me just start with this…the second I closed the cover of Days of Blood and Starlight, I immediately asked myself if it was OK to begin re-reading the series. That’s how wonderful this story was for me, so you can probably tell I’m giving it five stars. But besides the rating, if you have the hard cover – and I urge you to get it if you love this series – it is a beautiful book. Just gorgeous. The cover is stunning, the map of Eretz, with the angel and demon wings and chimera and angel warriors is beyond beautiful, and the little details at chapter headings as well as the “once upon a time” vignettes just take your breath away. If you don’t have it, get it.  It’s a work of publishing art. OK, back to Karou – if you weren’t thrilled with the flashbacks of the previous… Read more »

REVIEW: Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

REVIEW: Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Daughter of Smoke and Bone (DOSB) is the first book in the angel-apocalypse fantasy series by Laini Taylor. I read this book back when it came out because I was drawn to the cover. Yes, I admit it – I DO judge a book by its cover. But I was quickly engrossed in Karou’s fantastical real-life of chimeras, wishmongers, and angels. I love a good angel story and DOSB is a very good start to an enthralling angel story. Karou is an art-student living in Prague, she has a best friend named Zuzana, an ex-boyfriend who thinks he’s a street actor, and is the foster-daughter of a chimera called Brimstone. He’s the Devil, they say, but Karou only knows him as Brimstone. The creature who took her in and cared for her as a baby. A chimera is a combination of animals and human and there are more fantastical combinations… Read more »

Julie’s Top Ten Favorite Books Read In 2012 Fiction 1.  Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor – this was, hands, down, the best book I read (besides my own, of course) in 2012.  I had mixed feelings about the first one, not really enjoying the back story as much as the present story, but this book changed all that for me.  I never did connect with Karou’s old self, but I did appreciate the multiple points of view a little more this time around.  I‘m really looking forward to the next book and I sincerely hope she’s hard at work… Read more »

Retrograde: Week In Review #2

Retrograde: Week In Review #2

Retrograde is a weekly meme I do to look back on my week and look back on a favorite book and reintroduce it to the world.  This week my pick is Watership Down by Richard Adams.  Today this book is a classic, but when I first read it, it was pop fiction!  I was in 4th grade and my language arts teacher recommended it to us.  As I was trying to think of another new adult book that I could resurrect from the past, Watership Down wasn’t the first book on my list.  But when I started to think about it more critically, the characters, who are all rabbits, if you’ve never read the book, are actually little bunny versions of new adult people (in their own little rabbit way). You see the main characters are Hazel, Fiver, and Bigwig.  They are part of a big warren of rabbits (a… Read more »
