REVIEW: Alternity by Mari Mancusi

Alternity by Mari Mancusi Imagine waking up in a post-apocalyptic, nightmare world–and being told your whole life is but a dream. Skye Brown thought she was your typical teen–good grades, hot boyfriend, and an afterschool job that pays her to play videogames. But then she started having the dreams. In her dreams, there is no Earth. Only Terra, a bleak, underground wasteland where people live in squalor and oppression. In her dreams, there is no Skye–only Mariah, a rebel leader fighting against a vile, dystopian regime. And then there’s Dawn, a handsome, but haunted solider who sees her as but an empty shell of the girl he once love–a betrayer he vows to hate forever, despite what she sees deep in his eyes. Now, ripped between Dark Siders and club kids, the mundane and the mystic, Skye finds herself in a fight against time–to learn who she really is, where… Read more »

REVIEW: The Mad Scientist’s Daughter by Cassandra Rose Clarke

REVIEW: The Mad Scientist’s Daughter by Cassandra Rose Clarke

The Mad Scientist’s Daughter  by Cassandra Rose Clarke  This title will be released on January 29, 2013 by Angry Robot  The Mad Scientist’s Daughter is the heartbreaking story of the journey from childhood to adulthood, with an intriguing science fictional twist. There’s never been anyone – or anything – quite like Finn. He looks, and acts human, though he has no desire to be. He was programmed to assist his owners, and performs his duties to perfection. A billion-dollar construct, his primary task is to tutor Cat. When the government grants rights to the ever-increasing robot population, however, Finn struggles to find his place in the world. REVIEW: I was blown away – BLOWN away by this story.  I loved it.  I used to read nothing but literary fiction, oh, maybe ten-fifteen years ago.  But then I read The Time Traveler’s Wife and I was so put off by the… Read more »

Ready to try and forget the night that ripped her life apart. Her plans come to a screeching halt when not one, but both brothers responsible for the accident end up back in her life again. REVIEW: Tommy Knuckles Trilogy by Jarrah Loh

REVIEW: Tommy Knuckles Trilogy by Jarrah Loh

Cageside Chronicles: Tommy Knuckles Trilogy Book 1  by Jarrah Loh The young adult fiction series for the warrior at heart! This is the book series that UFC & MMA fans have been waiting for! Tommy lowered his head again. “I’m not a fighter,” he said. “Maybe you are, maybe you ain’t,” shrugged the man. “Maybe you just don’t know it yet.” The saga begins with the lonely Mexican teenager, Tommy, who’s been beaten up his whole life. But when ghosts emerge from his dead father’s boxing past, a new world of adventure, love and pain awaits as he learns to fight his way across the border to his father’s homeland, and into the famed cages of Las Vegas. REVIEW: I picked up the Tommy Knuckles Trilogy a few weeks ago after stumbling onto this unusual look at new adult life from a boy’s perspective, something I think we are severely… Read more »

GUEST POST: New Adult: The Rest of the Freaking Story

GUEST POST: New Adult: The Rest of the Freaking Story

New Adult: The Rest of the Freaking Storyby Regan Wolfrom There’s something about Young Adult fiction that’s always bothered me: it’s only half the story. YA is half of the story about what it’s really like to be a teenager; there’s no real sex in its pages, and no one actually says what they’d really say… you know, if it wasn’t being written down to be read by an audience of impressionable youth. Being a teenager is hard… it’s probably the worst phase of life until that part in your nineties where you break your hip weekly and you’re deliriously happy if you manage to make it to the bathroom maybe half of the time. Being a teenager sucks. YA reflects that, relates that, escapes that… But YA only covers your teens, which is about half of the time it takes to actually grow the heck up and find out… Read more »

GUEST POST: Jamie Marchant – Author of The Goddess’s Choice

GUEST POST: Jamie Marchant – Author of The Goddess’s Choice

Jamie Marchant, author of The Goddess’s Choice, is hard at work on the sequel, tentatively titled  The Soul Stone. Her short fiction has been published in Bards & Sages, The World of Myth, and Short-story.me. One question I’m often asked is where do you get the ideas for your writing. My first published novel, The Goddess’s Choice—an adult sword and sorcery fantasy novel—originated deep within my childhood. My sister Jalane–she is ten years older than me–would tell me and my younger sister stories, fairy tales mostly:  “Midas and His Golden Touch,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Hanzel and Gretel.” But my favorite was always “The Princess and the Glass Hill” or “The Glass Mountain” as my sister titled it. Wendie and I would have her tell that story over and over again. I was captivated by the bold hero on his magical horses of bronze, silver, and gold.  As I got… Read more »
