{Blog Tour} Guest Post & Giveaway: I Am Just Junco Series by J.A. Huss My Favorite High-Tech Gadgets in Clutch Part of the fun of reading science fiction is learning about new tech items that the author dreamed up. Sometimes they go overboard and everything in the everyday world of the characters is something new and cool. I hate that. It makes things feel fake and I like the tech in SF novels to be unobtrusive, only bringing it out when you need it. My favorite author, Richard K. Morgan, did this in a big way in Altered Carbon with the sentient hotel called The Hendrix. A sentient hotel! It played a small role in the overall story, but it was significant for the ending. I loved The Hendrix because it had badass weapons system built into its lobby and saved Kovacs butt in one particular scene. Plus, it was… Read more »

Review of Darkhouse by Karina Halle

Review of Darkhouse by Karina Halle

Darkhouse (Experiment in Terror, #1) by Karina Halle was the funnest thing I’ve read in a very long time.  When considering what rating to give this book was tempted to give a four or maybe a four and a half just because there’s nothing real deep about the book as far as the underlying message goes.  It’s just plain fun. And then I started thinking I really need to come up with a scale so I can judge all books equally.  I mean, is plot the most important thing?  Character development?  Setting?  Theme? And I’ve come to the conclusion that it must have a combination of all these things, but that each individual book can have these requirements in different ratios and still be a five rating. Whew…with that said…Darkhouse is a five star book and I’ll tell you why it got the five stars and Fall From Grace did… Read more »

That Little Something, Something

That Little Something, Something

My favorite book is not a romance but I love the main character because of a romance that never actually happens. Sounds weird, right? Well, it is and it isn’t. You see my favorite character in fiction is a ruthless, cold-hearted killer named Takeshi Kovacs. He’s not a good guy, he’s not a nice guy, he’s not a romantic guy, and he’s not even a reliable or trustworthy guy. And as far as being a boyfriend goes? Well, he’s not a relationship guy either. You’re probably asking yourself why I’m even talking about him in terms of great fictional relationships, right? Let me explain. 😉 Kovacs stars in a three book series that begins with his “partner” and himself being blown to bits during a police raid. You see, they’re criminals and they got caught. No worries though, this is science fiction so he just gets uploaded into “storage” which… Read more »

Fall from Grace by Christine Zolendz

Fall from Grace by Christine Zolendz

Fall from Grace by Christine Zolendz is anew adult novel that kept me up all night flipping page after page to see what happens.  This is sign of a really good story. I wish every book I picked up had this effect on me. I thoroughly enjoyed Grace and her BFF, Lea.  The story begins with a heartbreaking loss for Grace when her brother, one of only two people who know the secrets she been hiding, dies of cancer.  We do learn fairly early that Grace is no stranger to sadness and loss, although this does not get elaborated on until later. We also meet Gabriel in the first few pages, giving condolences, but who he is, and what he wants, is not explained until later.  His true motivations really don’t come until the very end. Grace has been living at the hospice with her brother for six months, and… Read more »

The Forever Girl – by Rebecca Hamilton

The Forever Girl – by Rebecca Hamilton

In The Forever Girl – Sophia’s Journey by Rebecca Hamilton, Sophia is a twenty-two year old woman, let’s call her a woman, who lives alone in her familial house after her mother died.  She lives in the Rocky Mountains, near Denver. She’s a Wiccan and apparently is (or thinks she is) responsible for her mother’s death and possibly another person in town. First what I liked about this book: Sophia.  I really did enjoy this character.  She’s tough, she’s interesting, and she drives a Jeep!   She’s not afraid to be herself, although she is afraid to tell her secrets even to her best friends.  She has some fun dialog in the exchanges between herself and Charles, unfortunately, most of these come early on in the book and it doesn’t keep that same charm throughout.  I also liked the setting – as someone who lives in the Rockies, not very far… Read more »

Why We Love Fictional Characters

Why We Love Fictional Characters

I’m obsessed with understanding why I like a character. Why I like a story as well, but mostly what makes me drawn to one character over another. I think about this a lot when I’m reading, partly because I’m a writer and partly because it will help me find more books that I enjoy. Knowing why readers connect to, say, Eric Northman in the Sookie Stackhouse novels, is important. Why Eric? I love Eric, far more than I ever loved Bill. Bill is just…not Eric. And apparently Sookie agreed. Bill is good-looking, he’s a vampire, he’s sorta old, which makes him powerful. He’s rich, he’s compassionate, and he gave Sookie his blood (creating the blood bond) just like Eric did. So, ya know. You’d think Eric and Bill would be on fairly even ground. But it’s never been that way, for me at least. Eric Northman stands out as a… Read more »
